10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

There is always that one movie that you keep coming back to. That no matter how many times you watch it, it never gets old. ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ is that for me.

I first watched this movie when I was ten. I thought I was the coolest person ever watching a movie that wasn’t PG or U even though I couldn’t understand any of the sexual innuendos or lude comments.

’10 Things I Hate About You’ is a modern day (or was in 1999) retelling of William Shakespeare’s play ‘The Taming of the Shrew’. It tells the story of the Stratford sisters, beautiful but untouchable. All because of a strict father with a very protective streak. The sisters are not allowed to date.

The elder of the two, Kat Stratford, played by Julia Stiles, is a very independent, strong-minded young woman. She doesn’t like to conform and do what is expected of her. She likes to speak her mind. A lot. Frankly, she is a badass and definitely my hero. As a result of her abrasive nature, she doesn’t have too many guys chasing after her.

The other sister, Bianca, is the more typical All American sweetheart. She just loves to impress others and look good. She is extremely annoying and oh so demanding. She just wants to go on dates with guys.

So….. The father, seeing how Kat hates everyone, especially the guys at her school, makes a new rule. Bianca isn’t allowed date anyone…… Until Kat does.

And so begins a mission for Bianca to find an appropriate suitor for her sister with the help of a guy, called Cameron, she is stringing along. What can I say? She’s self-centred.

In walks Patrick Verona, played by Heath Ledger (SWOOOOOOOON), who is just as badass as Kat and the perfect match for her. They only have to make Kat see this now, much to their troubles.

I absolutely ADORE this movie. I mean it has Heath Ledger so how could you not? There is a perfect balance between romance and badassery. The 90s got sick on it and I LAAAAAV it. Julia Stiles is just so cool and I think she is like the ultimate heroine. There is also not a lot of corny, cheesy moments which is great. Those types of scenes can ruin a movie.  The whole premise of this movie is just fab. If you haven’t watched you have to get up, go to a DVD shop and search for it until you find it. You will regret not having seen it already.
